Before becoming a white walker, the Night King was one of the First Men, captured by the Children of the Forest, including Folha. She pressed an obsidian dagger against his chest, causing his eyes to turn blue and make him the first of the White Walkers. Thousands of years later, Folha tells Bran Stark that her people created the White Walkers to defend themselves against the First Men who were invading Westeros, cutting down their sacred trees and killing many of their species.

He is the leader and, theoretically, the creator of all the White Walkers who came after him, and the first of his kind, having existed since the era of the First Men. By extension, he is also the master of Creatures.
